Creative Artist Assistants: ABCD Alternative Tours 

Sussex Dance Network are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for four people identifying as either: 

  • A recent graduate from performance and/or arts based degrees, completing studying in 2020/21. 
  • Someone who has not been to university due to financial or access barriers.

Time Commitment: This role amounts to 37.5 hours (5×7.5 hour days) 

Contracted Period: December 2021 and March 2022 (spread of hours to be negotiated)  

Fee: £75 per day (total across the contract £375)

Submission Deadline: Monday 6th December 2021 

Selection Process: 

  • Everybody who completes an expression of interest will be offered a 10 minute informal zoom/telephone conversation with SDN’s Artistic Director who will shortlist. These will happen on Thursday the 9th of December 2021 via zoom. 
  • Those shortlisted will be invited to an informal conversation via zoom/telephone with the Producer responsible for your chosen tour. These will happen on the week commencing 13th December 2021.

If you are interested in applying, please read on and tell us which tour you would be most interested in working on. We do not expect you to have experience in all aspects of the role as this is also a development opportunity.  

Project Assistant: Angela El-Zeind 

About the Role: 

Sussex Dance Network are looking for an enthusiastic Project Assistant to assist verbatim theatre-maker Angela El-Zeind in the development and delivery of a series of guided artistic tours of Brighton.

Angela is creating an art trail based on the multifaceted theme of motherhood. The project will involve working closely with people from diverse communities whose voices, narratives, and perspectives on the complexities of being a mother, will be woven together to create a compelling experience for audiences.

Duties will include the following as well as anything else reasonably asked by the Artist, Producer and Artistic Director:

  • Attending and assisting with the delivery of the project tours and workshops;
  • Recording and note-taking;
  • Liaising with project participants; collaborators; and SDN team members as applicable.

Personal Specification:

Essential

  • An enthusiasm for verbatim theatre and inclusive, community-driven work;
  • Highly collaborative as well as able to use initiative and work independently;
  • Capable of handling sensitive topics with empathy and tact;

Project Assistant: Ebony Rose Dark

About the Role: 

Sussex Dance Network are looking for an enthusiastic Project Assistant to assist visually impaired cabaret artist Ebony Rose Dark in the development and delivery of a series of guided sensory tours of Brighton. 

Using smell, touch and hearing to navigate and explore the city, the tours will aim to empower visually impaired people within Brighton. The project is community-driven, and involves working closely with people from across the visually impaired community.

Duties will include the following as well as anything else reasonably asked by the Artist, Producer and Artistic Director:

  • Working with the Artist to develop the structure and content of project tours;
  • Attending and assisting with the delivery of the project tours and workshops;
  • Recording and note-taking;
  • Processing and developing material collected during workshops;
  • Liaising with project participants; collaborators; and SDN team members as applicable.

Personal Specification:

  • Passionate about access and working with individuals with access needs;
  • Highly collaborative as well as able to use initiative and work independently;

Project Assistant: Draw to Perform and Enayball 

About the Role: 

Movement guides the tool in a tour combining drawing with performance. Developed at Brighton University, the Enayball is a new tool that makes drawing accessible to people who use wheelchairs or have other access needs. On the tour you’ll see how the drawings are made, view a range of artwork and maybe make your own mark. This tour is being created by Ram Samocha (Draw to Perform) and Eli Heath and Pete Barr (Enayball).

Duties will include the following as well as anything else reasonably asked by the Artist, Producer and Artistic Director:

  • Helping to facilitate workshop activity including supporting participants and organising materials. 
  • Assisting with planning and implementing aspects of the tour 
  • Social media/PR activity

Project Assistant: Anna Des Clayes 

About the Role: 

Sussex Dance Network are looking for an enthusiastic Project Assistant to assist community dance artist Anna Des Clayes.This project engages members of the refugee community in Brighton in a series of creative workshops combining dance, storytelling, and reflection. Developing from the workshops, participants will collectively create an immersive performance event that invites audience members to be guided on a personal and alternative tour of Brighton.

Duties will include the following as well as anything else reasonably asked by the Artist, Producer and Artistic Director:

  • Supporting delivery of workshops and the tours
  • Collaboration on development of creative tasks
