Join Katharine Le Roux and Martina La Trobe-Bateman as they discuss their recent research into how we experience dance when it is translated into another medium. Together they have examined how an audience’s experience and ‘reading’ of dance differ when it is presented in a way which abstracts it from the original.
Through a series of experiments they have studied what happens on a communication level, when dance – occurring in the realms of moving space and time, and physical interaction with environment and sound – is captured with photography, a medium which is flat, still and static in time. They ask whether this changes the way we experience the choreography, whether we are still able as viewers to decode the series of events, and how this change of medium may influence what becomes important in the viewing.
